Last night saw Mat Dolphin take the stage at v3. Mat Dolphin is a two man design team, comprised of Tom Actman and Phil Cook (Mat Dolphin is an anagram of the two names). You'd be forgiven for thinking they were a much bigger outfit considering their digital presence and their very vocal opinion.
Every designer at some point thinks about setting up their own studio, so it was great to hear first hand what's involved. In MD's case the business plan was integral to their success. Scribbled on a piece of A4 using a Sharpie pen, this manifesto was to guide them from a slightly smelly Leytonstone to super cool Soho.
Their honest account of their journey was great to hear. They got a few things wrong along the way but they got a lot of things right. And as they put it, they're still making it up each day.
it was a love of Stanley Kubrick and Frisbee that brought Tom and Phil together and it was the latter they used to solve problems. Playing frisbee freed their minds to think clearly about the myriad of problems that have to be dealt with daily.
Having balls, Tom says, is an important quality. He tapped up Norman Jay on on a boat party and managed to convert that chat into a large piece of work and a two year working relationship.
All in all it was a great evening.
We're looking forward to welcoming Mr. Bingo to v3 towers next week to share his love of working for free.
